Many countries that use winner-take-all voting systems have major campaigns to move to PR. Not only is PR more democratic, but - as we will explore - it leads to better policies, fairer societies, and better guardianship of the environment. In countries stuck with antiquated electoral systems, a move to PR would mean taking control of the most fundamental tool we have to influence politics: the vote.
The Global Alliance for Real Democracy (GARD) includes Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Rwanda, South Korea, Taiwan, the UK and the USA. It is the beginning of an alliance to mutually support national campaigns for better democracy. In this session we will hear from some of the member countries’ campaigns, successes and learnings. A workshop will follow to share best practices and find ways to support each other's’ parallel campaigns around the globe to achieve our goals.
